FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need to show for a Student visa?

You need to show you have enough to cover your tuition fees for the first year (or full course if under a year) plus living costs. Living costs are £1,334/month for up to 9 months in London and £1,023/month outside London. These funds must have been held for at least 28 consecutive days before applying.

Do I need an ATAS certificate for my course?

ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) is required for certain postgraduate courses in sensitive subjects (e.g. some engineering, science, and technology subjects). Your CAS will indicate if ATAS is required. Applications must not be submitted before ATAS is obtained.

Can I work on a Student visa?

Yes, but with restrictions. Students at degree level or above can usually work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during vacations. Below degree level, the limit is 10 hours per week.

Can I stay in the UK after completing my studies?

Yes — the Graduate visa allows students who have completed a degree in the UK to stay for 2 years (3 years for PhD graduates) to work or look for work, without needing a job offer.
